Blossom is symbolic of spring. During the blossom season in Japan, people have cherry blossom (Sakura) celebrations with friends and family. They have picnics and barbeques under the cherry blossom trees. This Japanese custom is called hanami, which means ‘watching blossoms,’ and can be traced back at least a thousand years. Schools and businesses organise welcome parties during hanami – a chance for people, young and old, to bond and make new friends.
